Emilia Romagna is considered one of the most important regions, not just in Italy, for its gastronomy and wine making tradition. The name Emilia Romagna comes from the Via Emilia road, which the Romans used for the transportation of wine between its cities. Emilia Romagna is a rich, fertile region in northern Italy, and one of the country's main wine producers.

The region's geographical diversity is significant, and plays an important part in creating the various terroirs found here dividing the region in 3, with the Sangiovese being widely planted in the east, the Romagna, Lambrusco in the centre, and Barbera and Bonarda in the west, Emilia. The region has several DOC appellations and 2 DOGCs and the production is equally split between whites and reds with the main grape varieties being Malvasia and Lambrusco, Trebbiano, Barbera, Bonarda, Albana and of course Sangiovese.

Emilia Romagna is known for its sparkling wine, either frizzante or spumante and for the latter both Classic and Charmat method, starting with the Lambrusco in all its appellations.
